THE HISTORY OF A MEDITERRANEAN FISHERMEN FAMILY
TRADITION AS A GUARANTEE FOR QUALITY
1953-1968A LIFE DEDICATED TO FISHING
After his father's death, when Don Manuel was still a very young man he started working in different positions to support his family. One of these positions was working on a boat in the Mediterranean. During these fishing activities he developed skills as a sailor, mechanic, chief engineer and skipper.
This knowledge was extremely useful when he acquired his first boat ‘El Valeta’ in 1965, which allowed him to operate as a producer in the Mediterranean fishing grounds.
1968 - 1977EXPANSION OF THE FISHING FLEET
In 1968 two new purse seiners, ‘Teide’ and ‘Armstrong’ were launched. 6 years later in 1974 the first trawler ‘Mi Miguel’ was commissioned and built in Adra, which focused primarily on premium quality shellfish including red shrimp, white shrimp and mediterranean langoustine.
During these years, the Carabinero was considered to be a second class seafood and was not much appreciated by the classic consumers of the Spanish market, and in fact it was not commercialized at all and was simply given away to the sailors and their families.
1977 - 1986ESTABLISHMENT AS A PREMIUM SEAFOOD PRODUCER IN THE MEDITERRANEAN
‘Atenea’ and ‘Acuario’ were built for the expanding fleet in order to establish the company as reference ship owners in Spanish and Moroccan fishing areas.
1986 - 1990RENEWAL OF THE FISHING FLEET AND PIONEERS OF ON-BOARD FREEZING
A complete update and overhaul of the old fleet was necessary to continue ‘leading the field’ and so an ambitious and potentially risky construction began of a completely new fleet of trawlers.
Don Manuel, in association with carefully trusted partners made a strategic move to become a reference producer for premium shellfish. Introducing the first ships equipped with deep-freezing on board systems made the company pioneers of on-board freezing technologies to ensure the products were the highest quality imaginable.
1990 - 2000A NEW ERA BEGAN
The knowledge and experience of his late father enabled Don Antonio Fernandez to take over the management of the family business and to strategically reposition its place in the modern era.
Through partnerships with local partners in Africa, and the construction of 4 new light-weight reinforced fiberglass trawlers, he underwent this strategic change and specialised in premium shellfish while reducing production cost at the same time.
It was also a first step towards sustainable production which is still deeply incorporated into our core company values today.
2000 - 2015FIRST STEPS TOWARDS VERTICAL INTEGRATION OF THE GROUP
The change in strategy led to a remarkable growth in demand for quality seafood.
The logical consequence was the acquisition of a majority stake in the ‘Venalcadi’ auction in southern Spain.
2015 - todayDeveloping Global markets
In order to focus, streamline and maximise all of the knowledge and expertise within their family, Don Antonio's sons, Luis Miguel and Javier launched HISPAMARE in 2015. Steeped in the traditions and knowledge of the family business from birth, they brought a modern viewpoint and the ambition to ensure that Don Manuel and Don Antonio’s legacy would be shared in the finest restaurants and hotels all around the world.
The brothers studied hard and learnt several foreign languages from a very young age to ensure their dream would become a reality. Four years into the Hispamare project, vertical integration is optimised and we are proud to work with hand-picked key export partners in the UK, France, Italy, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, with ambitious plans for new and emerging markets elsewhere.
2019SCALING THE FLEET
